So Happy Together

New-Look Pixies Come to the Agora

By Jake Janiak

Your favorite band’s favorite band is back in business.

It’s strange to consider that the Pixies have been together as a reunited band for almost twice as long as their original run. For a brief period during the late-80s-to-the-early-90ss, the Pixies kept themselves busy by churning out some of the most beloved and revered classics of the alternative/independent rock scene, right under the noses of the public.

Though they were never quite as big as they could’ve (read: should’ve) been, adoration from critics and fellow musicians alike (most notably from Mr. Cobain and Mr. Bowie themselves), as well as a few minor radio hits in “Here Comes Your Man” and “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” earned them their first taste of mainstream recognition.

Thanks to the advent of the World Wide Web, as well as the fact that every band riding the alternative wave had no choice but to inherit the sound the Pixies pioneered, the Boston-based quartet finally seem to be getting their due after all these years.

Though their initial reunion back in 2004 felt more like a victory lap than a true comeback, a string of new material beginning in 2013 confirmed that the Pixies fully intend to show a new generation who the true masters of alt-rock are.

Their latest release, 2016’s Head Carrier, is the second album to come out of this new phase of the band.

Fans will be pleased to find that even 30 years on, the band has kept many of the same ingredients that earned them their spot in rock history in the first place.

Boundlessly quirky lyrics, vocalist Black Francis’s signature howl, the band’s signature LOUD-quiet-LOUD songwriting formula; the only piece missing is former bassist Kim Deal. Expect to hear quite a few classics, too; the band has enough fan-favorites under their belt from their original four records to fill a setlist and a half.

Catch the Pixies on October 3rd, at the Agora Ballroom on Euclid Avenue. Tickets start at $76.
